If your iPod Photo 60gb shows a sad face support screen, it's likely the result of a failed hard drive. The hard drive may also need to be replaced if your iPod randomly skips songs or has sync errors.
A good way to tell if your iPod Photo hard drive has gone bad, is by putting the back of the iPod up to your ear on boot-up, and listening to the HDD spin up. A normal drive spins smooth, while a bad drive may click, scratch, or be very noisy. If you have the symptoms of a bad hard drive and can confirm the drive is not spinning smooth, there is a good chance the hard drive needs replacing.
This is a used Toshiba 60gb hard drive. The model is MK6006GAH which is the OEM drive used in the iPod Photo 60gb.

Hard Drive Upgrade
There are no hard drive upgrades available for the 60gb model.
Downgrading to the 40gb hard drive is one option. Downgrading to the 20gb or 30gb hard drives is also an option, however, these are thinner single-platter drives so the excess space will need to be filled (i.e. cotton pads) to prevent the hard drive from moving around inside the iPod.

Formatting: With the drive installed, connect your iPod to iTunes and click the restore button. The iPod software will automatically be installed onto the drive.
Data: You will lose all data from your iPod when replacing the hard drive.
