Is this the part I need?

-Fix iPod Classic red x
-Fix iPod Classic clicking
-Fix iPod Classic sync issues
-Fix music skipping on iPod Classic

If your iPod Classic 80gb shows a Red-X support screen, it's likely the result of a failed hard drive. The hard drive may also need to be replaced if your iPod randomly skips songs or has sync errors.

A good way to tell if your iPod Classic 80gb hard drive has gone bad, is by putting the back of the iPod up to your ear on boot-up, and listening to the HDD spin up. A normal drive spins smooth, while a bad drive may click, scratch, or be very noisy. If you have the symptoms of a bad hard drive and can confirm the drive is not spinning smooth, there is a good chance the hard drive needs replacing.

Quality

This is a fully tested used Toshiba 80GB hard drive. The model is MK8022GAA which is the OEM drive used in the iPod Classic 80GB.

Over the years we have sorted through hundreds of manufacturers to build an offering of the highest quality parts on the market. Feel confident in your purchase knowing that you will get maximum longevity from this iPod Classic 80gb hard drive!

Upgrading Hard Drive Capacity

The hard drive for the iPod Classic 80GB model is a single-platter hard drive. You can upgrade to the Toshiba 120GB or Toshiba 160GB hard drive but they must be single-platter or else will not fit in the iPod casing. The correct HDD models are as follows: 120GB -> MK1231GAL and 160GB -> MK1634GAL. Both of these hard drives are available on our website. There are no software complications or changes that must be made when upgrading your hard drive size.

Downgrading is always an option too. The lowest replacement for any iPod Classic hard drive is the Toshiba MK3008GAL 30gb hard drive, which is the iPod Video 30gb OEM HDD.

Exception:
The one iPod Classic model that uses a thicker dual-platter hard drive, and therefore has a thicker backplate, is the iPod Classic 6th Generation 160GB model. The stock hard drive for this model is the Toshiba MK1626GCB 160GB HDD. The only upgrade for this model is the Toshiba MK2431GAH 240GB HDD. Most downgrades will be single-platter hard drives which are compatible, however, you will need to fill the excess space inside the casing with some type of shim (cotton?). Also, the hard drive cable will need to be replaced with the wider style.

'Replacing the harddrive was very easy (maybe a 3 out of 10 difficulty), but getting the case open was not. I had the red x and this fixed it! Great part.'
